Alconbury Weald, Cambridgeshire

JTP on behalf of Urban&Civic, David Lock Associates, Peter Brett Associates (now part of Stantec) and Bradley Murphy Design

Submission summary:

Following the closure of the airfield in 1995, Alconbury was principally used for storage and distribution, distinctive only in its vastness and for the hundreds of shipping containers lining the runways.

Determining where to create the first homes on such a large, featureless open site was essential to the success of the first - and all future - residents, and a placemaking strategy was developed to grow the community from the historic Ermine Street.

Residents are now settling into a neighbourhood unrecognisable from 5 years ago – and one that sets the benchmark for the next 20 years as the community grows.
