Illuminated River

Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands / Illuminated River Foundation

This collaboration between New York artist, Leo Villareal and architects Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands combines art and architecture in subtly sequenced patterns of light across up to fourteen Thames bridges with colours referencing Impressionist and English Romantic painters. It unites the river as a continuous living system, respecting its ecology and revealing the heritage and structure of each bridge. It is civic art, architecture and urban planning - free, accessible and open to all.

Planning has been approved for all 14 bridges, phase 1 illuminated in July 2019 with the next phase of five bridges due for illumination Q1 2021.
