Submission summary: The Glass Works (TGW) is the transformative 3.8-hectares regeneration of Barnsley town centre. Barnsley Metropolitan Council (BMBC) is demonstrating the seismic impact investment can have on a town centre. It celebrates Barnsley’s diverse heritage, delivering:
- A state-of-the-art library
- A home for Barnsley’s 800-year-old market
- Enhanced public realm / new retail
Phase 2 is under construction (completion 2021) and includes a new public square, shops, leisure, multi-storey car park and bridge.
Throughout the £180m investment, BMBC capitalised on local assets to create accessible spaces that promote culture and a sense of community, whilst unlocking the long-term potential of the wider region
