Jenny Taylor-Smith

Head of Town Planning, ASDA

Jenny Taylor-Smith has been working in the Real Estate industry for approx. 20 years, graduating with a first Degree, followed by a Masters in Town Planning. Her first role in Local Government as a Planning Development Officer gave her a 'passion for planning', before moving into the Local Policy Team. She later ventured into private consultancy, at Deloitte Real Estate, advising clients such as private developers and large companies (ASDA) on real estate and planning matters.

During this time she had the opportunity to Chair a Regional Branch for the Association of Women in Property (WIP) and network amongst other professionals in the industry. Jenny joined ASDA in 2013 and now leads the Town Planning Team nationwide, which involves looking after 720 stores, depots, Home Shopping Centres and petrol filling stations across the UK, as well as managing planning matters on new acquisitions and disposals. She is responsible for providing planning strategies for the optimisation of sites including redevelopment with third parties / new tenants and offers such as eCommerce.

With the aim to help retailers, she worked with the Government on the 'Agent of Change' principle to put the onus on developers to mitigate against any issues arising from existing, adjacent stores. This was a groundbreaking move, with significant impact for the rest of the retail sector and the policy has now been adopted in the 2018 National Planning Policy Framework. Jenny represents the UK for ASDA as part of the WIRED International leadership programme (Women in Real Estate Development) for Walmart, designed with the purpose of enhancing and boosting the integral development of women, motivating each international market to accelerate a cultural change that will allow increasing women representatives in leadership roles. Visiting the Walmart US and Canada in 2019 has promoted the sharing of best practices within WIRED worldwide. Jenny also had the pleasure of being listed within the The Planner – Women of Influence List 2019 and nominated for The English Women's Awards (North) 2019 - Services to Business and Northern Power Women, Power List 2020.
