Executive summary from entrant:

John O'Groats Mill represents an exemplary heritage-led regeneration of Scotland's last operational water-powered grain mill. Acquired by the community in 2020 after standing vacant since 2001, this £4.9m restoration has transformed a Category B-listed building at risk into a thriving hub for education, enterprise, and community life. Through meticulous conservation, traditionally informed repairs, and a sensitively integrated extension, the project demonstrates how historic agri-industrial assets can drive sustainable place-making. The scheme has removed the mill from the Buildings at Risk Register whilst creating a dynamic resource that celebrates authentic heritage, enables inclusive access, and strengthens local identity.
