Windrush Public Art Commissions

Hackney Council

In 2018, Hackney Council invited artists with African-Caribbean heritage to develop permanent public artworks to commemorate and celebrate the Windrush generation, recognising the community’s contribution to the borough and the UK. The project involved consultation with 800 residents and saw permanent sculptures, designed by artists Veronica Ryan and Thomas J Price, unveiled in key community locations in October 2021 and June 2022. The judges praised an “excellent example of working with a variety of stakeholders and communities” and a project that shows “how art helps transcend time and life stories”.
